Quitting Smoking Side Effects – The Ugly Side of Quitting

When you make the decision to stop smoking, you should know that there can be a few negative quitting smoking side effects. These unpleasant side effects are usually short term, but they can be pretty intense, and you need to have a plan to deal with them so that you don’t pick up the smoking habit again.

Some people notice that they have a tendency to feel lightheaded when they stop smoking, especially when they change positions. If this happens, it will only last for a day or two.

After a couple of days, the dizziness will usually subside, and you’ll be able to go about your business without feeling lightheaded. In the meantime, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and change positions slowly. It may also help to wear support stockings.

Headaches are another common problem. If you experience this and aren’t using nicotine replacement, you may want to give that a try to see if it helps.

You may also feel fatigued as the nicotine effect wears off. Exercising, eating a healthy diet and staying away from junk food would help avoid this feeling of low energy.

You may have some difficulty sleeping as well. Exercising earlier in the day will help (don’t exercise just before going to bed – that increases your energy levels and will make it harder to fall asleep). You could also use a herbal sleep aid such as chamomile tea or valerian.

Another side effect of quitting smoking is an increased appetite. And you’ll notice that food taste better. Usually, if you are eating healthy snacks in between meals, you can curb your appetite without putting on extra weight. It’s important to avoid sugary foods, highly refined foods like white bread, snack foods and junk foods while you are quitting smoking. Not only will eating these make you more likely to gain weight, but they may actually increase your craving for cigarettes. Stick with a healthy diet emphasizing fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.

Mood swings, especially irritability and depression are some of the more disturbing quitting smoking side effects. For some people symptoms may be bad enough to warn being on antidepressants for a few months. If you’re concerned about this, it’s something that you should talk over with your doctor.

By listing these negatives side effects I by no means want to discourage you from quitting smoking. Giving up cigarettes and all forms of tobacco is one the best things you can do for yourself. The benefits greatly outweigh the short-term problems.

5 Benefits of Giving Up Smoking

The idea to give up smoking might seem really great, but what are you actually going to get out of it for the effort and commitment it requires? Here are some benefits of giving up smoking for you to consider.

Benefit Number One

You’ll look better. There really isn’t anything glamorous or attractive about smoking. Despite the Hollywood treatment, no one looks particularly good while they’re in the act (especially if they’re shivering outside during a rainstorm). But beyond that, smoking stains your teeth and your fingers and leads to premature wrinkling of your skin.

Benefit Number Two

You’ll be cleaner and your home will be cleaner. Although smokers tend not to notice it, cigarette smoke clings to everything in the environment. In the same way that it stains teeth, it dirties all the furniture, fabrics and wall treatments in a room. Once you’ve quit smoking, you’ll wonder how you ever tolerated it.

Benefit Number Three

You’ll save a boatload of money. Smoking is expensive and a more expensive all the time. It really seems ridiculous to spend that much money on something that has so many negative effects. Just about anything else you could spend that money on would be an improvement. Imagine what you might do with the money you free up when you quit.

Benefit Number Four

Your sense of self-worth will increase. You’ll feel better about yourself, and if you have children you feel much better about the example you’re setting for them.

Benefit Number Five

And of course a major, major benefit of giving up smoking is your improved health. It’s difficult to overstate how devastating smoking is as a public health issue. The major killers of heart disease and cancer are both closely tied to smoking. But what’s more important to you is your personal health. The bottom line is that you continue to smoke you have both a poorer quality of life and a shorter life than you’d have if you quit now.

I’m pretty sure you know in your heart that you should stop smoking. You may even tried before and failed and have become discouraged. Don’t be. Giving up smoking, especially on your own, can be difficult in most people who become successful quitters don’t make it on the first attempt.

Immediate Benefits of Stopping Smoking

Of course you have heard of the long term health benefits of stopping smoking. Other than the lowered risk of cancer, emphysema, heart disease and stroke, there are tons of benefits. What about the immediate benefits that you will experience as soon as you quit smoking. When you begin inhaling clean air instead of cigarette smoke that is filled with toxins, many things begin to change. In fact, in less than a half an hour after you stop smoking your very last cigarette, your body begins to improve.

Your heart rate and blood pressure return to normal levels and less than a day later, your blood will be cleared of high carbon monoxide levels. Many people experience shortness of breath when walking or jogging if they smoke, but a few months after stopping smoking, all this will be gone! Your lung function improves greatly along with your circulation. In less than a year after stopping smoking, the cilia in your lungs will have worked to clean the tar filled mucus out of your lungs so that you are able to breathe filtered, clean air. This means that you will not cough as much and you can take deep breaths.

At the first completed year of not smoking, you will have cut your risk of heart disease right down the center! That is a huge improvement and just quitting smoking cuts the risk in half. Within five years of stopping smoking, you will also reduce your risk of a stroke, lung cancer and other cancers. These many include throat cancer, mouth cancer, bladder cancer and even cancer of the pancreas.

Although long-term good health is a reason to quit smoking, other immediate benefits will show as soon as you stop smoking. The premature aging from smoking will cease, along with the yellow stains on the teeth and fingernails as well as the odor of cigarettes which cover your hair and clothing. Your skin immediately begins repairs, working to undo the damage that tobacco has done. Your sense of smell and taste will become sharper and clearer and food will taste and smell better. Although these reasons are just some of the reasons to stop smoking, there are many others and utilizing them for your own ’stop smoking’ plan will greatly help you to kick the habit for good!

Quitting Smoking Benefits – Do You Know the Best Reasons For Quitting?

One the best things any smoker can do for themselves and those they care about is to stop smoking. I want to mention a few quitting smoking benefits here in the hopes that it will help you to finally free yourself from your cigarette addiction. The more reasons you have for giving up cigarettes, the more likely you’ll be to succeed.

Health reasons are usually the first thoughts that come to mind when someone considers why they are going to stop smoking.Of course you know that your health will improve if you stop smoking. Smoking causes 90% of lung cancers and most chronic lung disease. But lung cancer isn’t the worst of it. Lung cancer is a relatively quick (although painful) death. Chronic lung disease is a slow, debilitating painful death. If you’re struggling to catch your breath just walking across the room, it’s pretty hard to enjoy anything in life. As of lung disease progresses, life becomes more and more limited. Some smokers reached the point where they have to carry oxygen with them everywhere they go. At this stage, life pretty miserable

There is no safe level of smoking. You can’t smoke without damaging your lungs. Some smokers claim that the lungs are fine. In a word, baloney. No matter what their level of function is, it would be better if they didn’t smoke. The stories of "old Uncle Henry who smoked like a chimney and was never sick a day in his life" probably aren’t true. Even if they were, it’s a rare exception not the rule.

Your mental state will improve after you quit smoking. Showing the degree of commitment it takes to give up smoking will definitely increase your confidence and sense of pride. Many former smoker’s report that the experience of quitting smoking gave them confidence that they could do anything else they set their mind to.

Smoking is hugely expensive so your finances will also benefit when you quit smoking. The cost of cigarettes has gotten to the point where many smokers spend a good portion of their budget on cigarettes. It seems ironic to spend so much money to injure yourself. Think about all the better things you could do with that money when quit smoking once and for all. Most smokers could easily fund their retirement accounts or take a fancy vacation every year with what they spend on cigarettes. Some smokers could even do both.

You aren’t the only one you’ll be helping when you quit smoking. The benefits of your quitting smoking extend to those you love. Secondhand smoke injures those you live with physically. Watching you commit slow suicide with cigarettes wounds them emotionally.

I wish I could tell you that it’s simple and easy to stop smoking. Unfortunately I can’t. But quitting certainly isn’t impossible and I can tell you that you can succeed at giving up smoking with the combination of commitment and some of the stop smoking techniques available today. With the right help it might be easier than you expect.
